Project 01: Pink paisley-print dress

Yesterday was the gorgeous MrsU's birthday and since I hadn't made anything yet for my first ever project for my sewing challenge, I made a dress to wear to the party. Two birds, one stone. Yay!

The dress was super easy to make...

Started off with two pieces of rectangles where the lower half was wider by a few inches and gathered before it was sewn to the top half...

Next, the shirred bodice. Most important ingredient- elastic thread! Thread the bobbin with it and normal sewing thread on top. Start sewing straight lines and voila, shirring stitch!

Oh, and then my CQ requested for hot chocolate and I ended up having a break and watched a bit of "Catch me if you can" sipping hot and super-yummy Godiva hot chocolate. Ah, decadent.

And back to work on the second part. With the garment right side up, just start sewing straight, parallel lines. In my case, I sewed 12 lines and that was enough to hold it up without straps.

Tip: Mark the parallel lines on the garment (with washable markers, of course) before sewing the shirring stitches. I just used the edge of the presser foot and since I had to stretch out my garment as I sew, I ended up with (quite unnoticeable) wonky lines.

Tada, I think I'm addicted to shirrings now. Guess what you're getting for your birthdays this year, oh sisters and mommy of mine?

Me and the gorgeous MrsU at her birthday party last night. And the dress behaved and held up for the entire night.

  3. Chelle! Happy New Year! *big hugs* I love what you've done to this blog, thank God you kept it around kan?

I was so hoping to see you over Christmas so I could tell you abt the books Zein got me for Christmas =) They're on sewing (first gift that he thought of on his own that I really appreciate, haha) and they even have templates, which is the best! Cz I suck at cutting fabric as much as I suck at sewing in a straight line. Oh lord, do I need to practise!

Our next project is coincidentally a dress exactly like yours! Jess went on without us and made herself one some weeks ago and told us she is qualified to teach us now hehehe.. I am also attempting to sew a play quilt-mat and a changing mat for Kiddopotamus - pls ask your sibs if you don't already know who this is =p

I don't know how it will turn out, but I hope my jahitan won't go mereng mereng!

loooove ya!! (pls send my love to CQ too)

  5. Chelle, we were advised against your method because we were beginners and we were told that the thread could easily putus (or something to that effect)

Instead we used those elastic band and sewed them in straight line. So v. challenging! I should try your method next.. =)

  6. What nonsense? I just used shirring again in my Project 2, to replace fasteners (zippers/buttons, etc) in the back and it worked fine! :) Super easy!!
